Professor of Medicine and Assistant Dean for Technology & Innovation in Medical Education Dr. Scott Stern Delivers the 2010 Commencement Address
Scott Stern, MD, FACP presents his work on TIME during the 2010 Medical Education Day
June 11 , 2010 — Dr. Scott Stern, Professor of Medicine and Assistant Dean for Technology and Innovation at the Pritzker School of Medicine, delivered the keynote address - "From One Colleague to Another" - to Pritzker's graduating Class of 2010 during the Divisional Academic Hooding Ceremony (DAC). The DAC was held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 11, 2010 on the University of Chicago Midway.
In his address, Dr. Stern, a 1984 graduate of the Pritzker School of Medicine, invited the students to always remember that "the most important question for you all moving forward is how to remain fresh and continue to take enjoyment from your careers." He shared the lessons he - as a successful clinician, educator, husband, and father - has learned: "Appreciate what is sacred about your chosen path"; "Balance is key"; "Say yes often and no occasionally"; "You must persist and believe in yourself."
Since his arrival at the University in 1994, Dr. Stern has been an instrumental figure in the lives of Pritzker students. Within a year of his arrival, Dr. Stern took on the role of Co-Clerkship Director for the Medicine Clerkship. In 2003, he began his service as Co-Course Director of the Clinical Pathophysiology and Therapeutics with Dr. Aliya Husain of the Department of Pathology, ultimately receiving the “Rookie of the Year” award from the medical students.
Most recently, Dr. Stern has worked diligently to develop the TIME (Technology& Innovation in Medical Education) Project, which involves three components - a technology resource center, a searchable database, and a sophisticated simulation system. Dr. Stern has also been instrumental in the University's partnership with Wuhan University Medical School, located in China. Along with Dr. Renslow Sherer and other members of the Pritzker faculty, Dr. Stern has helped to establish this five-year program that aims to overcome identified deficiencies in medical education in China using the framework of the Pritzker curriculum.
Dr. Stern's influence has extended beyond our own institution and into the educational experiences of students across the country. Drawing upon his experiences as clerkship director, Dr. Stern served as the lead author of Symptom to Diagnosis: An Evidence Based Guide, published in 2006 by McGraw-Hill. This textbook utilizes an innovative approach to help students and residents master diagnostic reasoning, and is widely used throughout medical education.
Dr. Stern has long been a favorite faculty member of Pritzker students; he has been named a "Favorite Faculty" member since 2005, has thrice received the Doroghazi Award for clinical teaching, and has been a faculty marshall three times.
Dr. Scott Stern earned his MD degree from the University of Chicago in 1984 and completed the Combined Internal Medicine/Pediatrics residency training program at the University of Rochester, where he twice received the Outstanding Resident Teaching Award from the graduating class of the University of Rochester School of Medicine. Dr. Stern was selected for a six month term as Pediatric Outpatient Chief Resident and spent another year as Chief Resident in Medicine. After practicing internal Medicine for 5 years in Rochester, New York, he joined the University of Chicago Department of Medicine faculty as an Assistant Professor in 1994, rising to the position of Associate Professor in 1998. He was promoted to Professor in 2007.
