Peter Angelos, MD, PhD

June 24, 2011 — Dr. Peter Angelos, Professor of Surgery was recognized for receiving the 2011 University of Chicago Medical Center Faculty Physician Peer Role Model Award during the annual Student Clinician Ceremony on June 23rd, 2011.

The Faculty Physician Peer Role Model award recognizes the physician faculty member in the University of Chicago Medical Center who best exemplifies qualities of medical professionalism. Each May, physician faculty members are asked via an online survey to nominate the peers whom they consider to be role models based on dedication to patient care and demonstrated professional competence and integrity.

Dr. Peter Angelos, MD, PhD is Chief of Endocrine Surgery, and Associate Director of the MacLean Center for Medical Ethics. He is an expert in treating endocrine cancers, including thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenocortical cancers, as well as islet cell tumors of the pancreas.

An accomplished author, Dr. Angelos has published several journal articles and book chapters on his research into improving outcomes of thyroid and parathyroid surgery, minimally invasive endocrine surgery, and best practices for thyroid cancer treatment. He has also written widely on ethical issues in surgical practice and how to best teach medical ethics to surgical residents.

Dr. Angelos earned his medical degree and doctoral degree in Philosophy from Boston University. He completed his residency at Northwestern University and Fellowship in Endocrine Surgery at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Below are a few of the comments submitted about Dr. Angelos’s commitment to his patients and profession:

  • Dr. Angelos is an exceptionally skilled surgeon, a kind and compassionate physician and a patient teacher for his residents. He is busy clinically, does excellent research on endocrine diseases as well as ethical issues in surgery, and does as much (or more) than anyone in the department of surgery to advance the skills of the department's trainees. He is, in all ways, a model of academic achievement here at the U of C.
  • Peter Angelos is the consummate physician role model. I have observed nearly 100 attending surgeons operate and can confidently state his clinical skills are top-notch. He is extraordinarily patient and polite. He goes out of his way to teach everyone around him including his residents, students, patients, nurses and professionals outside his department. Even under stressful situations he is thoughtful and level-headed.

The Faculty Physician Peer Role Model Award is sponsored by the University of Chicago's Roadmap to Professionalism Steering Committee. Dr. David Cohen, Associate Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Dr. P. Allan Klock, Jr., MD Professor of Anesthesia & Critical Care recieved the award in 2010 and 2009 respectively.
