P. Allan Klock, Jr., MD, Receives Inaugural University of Chicago Medical Center Faculty Physician Peer Role Model Award

June 22 , 2009— On Thursday, June 18, 2009, Dr. P. Allan Klock, Jr. received the inaugural University of Chicago Medical Center Faculty Physician Peer Role Model Award at the annual Student Clinician Ceremony in the DCAM atrium at the University of Chicago Medical Center.

The Faculty Physician Peer Role Model award recognizes the physician faculty member in the University of Chicago Medical Center who best exemplifies qualities of medical professionalism. Physician faculty members were asked via an online survey to nominate the peers whom they consider to be role models based on dedication to patient care and demonstrated professional competence and integrity. Following his receipt of the award, Dr. Klock addressed the rising third year medical students urging them to maintain their empathy and compassion as they enter clinical phase of training. The award is sponsored by the University of Chicago's Roadmap to Professionalism Steering Committee.

Dr. Klock currently serves as the Vice-Chairman for Clinical Affairs in the Department of Anesthesia and Critical Care. Dr. Klock received his undergraduate degree in Biomedical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute before earning his MD from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. He completed his residency in Anesthesia at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. In 2006, Dr. Klock returned to Boston to participate in the Harvard School of Public Health’s leadership development program. His clinical interests focus on anesthesia for thoracic, vascular, and urologic patients; his academic interests include airway management and educating non-anesthesiologists about patient safety during sedation and analgesia. Dr. Klock is currently President of the Society for Airway Management.

Over 180 members of the faculty representing all ten clinical departments were nominated for the inaugural Faculty Physician Peer Role Model award. Below are just few of the comments submitted about Dr. Klock’s commitment to his patients and profession:
