Message from Pritzker Chiefs

Dear Alumni, Students, Faculty, & Staff,

Greetings Pritzkerites! And to the incoming Pritzker Class of 2011—welcome to the Pritzker Family! We have been eagerly awaiting your arrival and are excited to meet and get to know all of you. We are extremely honored to serve as your Pritzker Chiefs for this upcoming school year. The role of Pritzker Chief, created two years ago, is akin to that of a Chief Resident. However, instead of serving the faculty and housestaff, we act as liaisons between our student body and the Pritzker administration. Think of us as your full-service Pritzker concierges, assisting and addressing all issues from academic to social and everything in between.

Pritzker Chiefs

2007–2008 Pritzker Chiefs

Given the success of initiatives created by past Pritzker Chiefs, we have big shoes to fill. So rather than reinvent the wheel, we will be continuing the ever-popular quarterly Faculty/Student Dessert Socials and the Pritzker Book Club. These events give students and faculty the opportunity to interact in a more informal venue outside of the classroom and the clinic. This fall’s book club book is Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides. If you find yourself with some free time in the coming month, we recommend you grab a copy to read. The book raises provoking issues regarding identity and should make for great group discussions. Details about joining the book club will be available at the beginning of the quarter.

While we will continue the initiatives started by our predecessors, our goal for the upcoming year is to increase mentorship between our four classes. Starting in the fall, we will hold “Senior Lunches.” These informal luncheons will give underclassmen the chance to ask senior students about topics ranging from residency matching and board exams to places to live and hot spots in Chicago. If there are particular topics that you would like to discuss, please let us know. We anticipate these interactions will bring out the time-tested wisdom that our upperclassmen are eager to share.

Another great way to interact with upperclassmen, faculty, and alumni is to participate in the numerous service events available at Pritzker. As detailed in this edition of the Pulse, there are abundant opportunities to give back to our community while taking a break from the world of academic medicine and having a bit of fun with your fellow Pritzkerites at the same time. Of note, the activities fair to be held during the first weeks of school is a great way to learn about these activities available to you. Stay tuned for opportunities throughout the year and please participate—you’ll be glad you did.

As your Pritzker Chiefs, we aim to make this the best year possible for everyone at Pritzker. Our job is to be your voice. Please feel free to contact us regarding any matter that arises—however big or small. We can be reached via email at pritzkerchiefs@bsd.uchicago.edu, by pagers, or by “curb-siding” us in the hallways. We are always happy to help. Good luck this year and we hope to see and hear from all of you soon!

All the best,
Troy Leo and Kelly Eagen
