Students Receive AMA Awards
Aisha Reuler
Aisha Reuler, a third-year student, received a 2007 Minority Scholars Award, given by the AMA Foundation. As one of only 11 medical student recipients in the country, she will receive a $10,000 scholarship in recognition of her excellence as a medical student and out-standing promise for a future career in medicine. She recently completed a study with Dr. Melissa Gilliam in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology on the use of condoms in African-American adolescents. The study was presented at the Society of Adolescent Medicine Meeting. In addition to her research and medical studies, during the first two years of medical school, Aisha conducted a Saturday Science Club for inner city youth and tutored students through the Chicago Youth Program Score Tutoring Program. She also served as Co-President of the American Medical Women’s Association chapter at the University of Chicago.
Colin Walsh
Colin Walsh, a fourth-year student, is the winner of a 2007 AMA Physicians of Tomorrow scholarship. Colin is one of just twelve students to receive this prestigious $10,000 award. Since matriculating to Pritzker, Colin co-founded the USMLE Guidance and Support Group during his first-year of medical school and is in the process of creating online resources that outline exam preparation and logistics. As a research and teaching assistant, Colin has been instrumental in the development of the new undergraduate course Immersive Virtual Anatomy, which utilizes visualization technology rather than human cadavers to teach anatomy. As a result of this work, Colin was second author on the paper, Immersive virtual anatomy course using cluster of volume visualization machines, which recently appeared in Studies in Health Technology and Informatics. In addition, Colin’s review of the book First Aid for the USMLE Step 1 was recently accepted for publication in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
