| Purpose: | Scholarship awarded to a student who is a graduate of a high school in Southeast Alaska. |
| Eligibility: | Must be a current medical student who graduated from a high school in Southeast Alaska and has consistently earned academic honors. |

| Purpose: | For students with a commitment to addressing the needs of women and children. |

| Purpose: | To award scholarships to twelve students from groups who have historically been underrepresented in the medical profession. |
| Eligibility: | Students of African American/Black, American Indian, Native Hawaiian, Alaska Native, and Hispanic/Latino first or second year medical students. Each medical school nominates two students. |
| Funds: | $10,000 |

| Purpose: | To award rising fourth-year medical students, based on academic excellence, and financial need. |
| Eligibility: | Current fourth-year medical students. |

| American Association for the History of Medicine Osler Medal Essay Contest | |
| Purpose: | The William Osler Medal is awarded annually for the best unpublished essay on a medical historical topic written by a student enrolled in a school of medicine or osteopathy in the United States or Canada. |
| Eligibility: | All students who are candidates for the degree of Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy, or are graduates of the class of 2012, are eligible. |
| Process: | Essays may pertain to the historical development of a contemporary medical problem, or to a topic within the health sciences related to a discrete period in the past and should demonstrate either original research or an unusual appreciation and understanding of the problems discussed. The essay (maximum 9,000 words, including endnotes) must be entirely the work of one contestant. |
| Award: | The writer of the winning essay will be invited to attend the 2013 AAHM meeting, May 16-19, 2013, in Atlanta, Georgia, where the medal will be conferred. Reasonable travel expenses will be provided, as will a two-year complimentary membership in the AAHM. If the Osler Medal Committee also selects an essay for honorable mention, its author will receive a certificate and a two-year complimentary membership in the Association. |

| American College of Physicians Abstract competitions | |
| Purpose: | Abstracts are divided into four categories: Clinical Vignette, Basic Research, Clinical Research, Quality Improvement - Patient Safety. |
| Eligibility: | All first authors must be Associate or Medical Student Members in good standing to submit an abstract. |
| Award: | National winners are awarded a monetary prize to offset the cost of attending the meeting, and finalists are invited to compete on-site in the poster competitions for monetary prizes. |
| Deadline: | December 3, 2012 |
| Purpose: | Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society instituted this competition to encourage medical students to write creative narratives or scholarly essays relevant to medicine. |
| Eligibility: | Authors must be enrolled at medical schools with active AΩA chapters (Class of 2013 or later), but need not be members of AΩA. Only one entry may be submitted by each student. |
| Funds: | $2000 first, $750 second, $500 third, and honorable mention awards of $250 each. Prizes will be paid after the receipt of required documentation. |
| Deadline: | Entries must be sent by online form or e-mail (jane@alphaomegaalpha.org) no later than January 31, 2013. |
| ΑΩΑ Pharos Poetry Competition | |
| Purpose: | To encourage medical students to write effective poetry using imagery and rhythm or rhyme to structure the poem. See "What Poetry Does" for more help in writing effective poetry. |
| Eligibility: | Authors must be enrolled at medical schools with active AΩA chapters or associations (Class of 2013 or later), but need not be members of AΩA. |
| Funds: | $500 first; $250 second; $100 third, honorable mention $75. |
| Deadline: | Entries must be sent by online form or e-mail no later than November 30, 2012. |
| Arnold P. Gold Foundation Essay Contest | |
| Purpose: | In 1,000 words or fewer, drawing on real life experiences explain "What does it mean to you (and your patients) to be a steward of medicine?"

| Funds: | $1,000 first; $500 second; $250 third |
| Pisacano Scholars Leadership Program | |
| Purpose: | The Pisacano Scholars Leadership Program provides educational programs, leadership training, and funding for outstanding fourth-year medical students for a four-year period. Students must make a commitment to the specialty of family medicine. The funding program is designed to reimburse a portion of medical school debt incurred by the student by the conclusion of the required three-year residency. The Foundation is especially interested in students who exhibit the highest levels of skill, compassion, and leadership. |
| Eligibility: | Only applicants who in the fall of 2012 will be entering their fourth year (full-time) in a U.S. medical school will be considered. Applicants must have declared family medicine as their specialty. Applicants will be judged on commitment to family medicine, leadership qualities, academic performance, interpersonal skills, communication skills, and involvement in serving others. The Foundation Board requires each applicant to complete an interview with a local family physician. |
| Funds: | Although the scholarships are intended to reduce the level of medical-school-related debt, financial need is not a consideration. The maximum scholarship award is $28,000. The scholarship award for each year will be paid in August. Funds will be distributed during the remainder of medical school and during the three-year residency. |

| Pritzker Poetry Contest | |
| Purpose: | The Pritzker Poetry Contest aims to recognize and celebrate the humanistic side of medicine and to foster compassionate patient care at all levels of training and practice. The UCM community will be invited to engage in the first round of judging of all of the poems, which will be held anonymously. |
| Eligibility: | The 2012-2013 contest will be open to all University of Chicago Medical Center personnel – medical students, residents, faculty, nurses, technicians, ancillary staff, etc. – who have a UC Hospitals account or CNET ID. |
| Funds: | Four monetary prizes ranging from $1,000 to $250 will be awarded to the contest winners. |
| Deadline: | All materials must be received by January 15, 2013. Winners will be notified March 1, 2013. |
| Stanley M. Kaplan Essay Contest for Medical Students | |
| Purpose: | The submissions have covered a very broad range of topics and issues in psychiatry. |
| Eligibility: | Entries may include topical essays, case reports, review articles, or original research that was conducted in medical school for which the student was first author. Entries will be judged on creativity, knowledge of psychiatry, style, and contribution to understanding important problems in any of the biological, psychological, or social dimensions of psychiatry. There is no entry application and no standard format or length restriction for entries.All entries should be a single file that includes a title page with the student’s contact information (must include both email address and phone number). In addition, the file name for the entry should include the student’s last name.If a student would like to include a cover letter, this should be included in the same file as the entry submission. |
| Funds: | The winner will receive a cash prize of $500 and two runners-up will be awarded $250 each. |
