MD-PhD Programs

The University of Chicago has a long standing tradition of encouraging students to combine independent research and the study of medicine by obtaining the MD and PhD degrees concurrently. Graduates of combined programs are found in a variety of settings including teaching and research hospitals, universities, research institutions, biotechnology or pharmaceutical companies and more.

MSTP & GDTP

The Pritzker School is home to two highly competitive NIH funded joint doctoral programs, the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) and the Growth and Development Training Program (GDTP). The MSTP is available to applicants to the Pritzker School of Medicine who are interested in combining scholarly research with their medical studies. The GDTP is available to current medical students who decide to obtain a doctoral degree after matriculating at the Pritzker School of Medicine.

MeSH - MD/PhD Social Sciences, Humanities, & Other

The MeSH program offers medical students the opportunity to pursue a PhD in the humanities or social sciences. Both current and incoming medical students are encouraged to apply for this program. Students interested in aging issues may be eligible for the Medicine, Social Sciences and Aging program, sponsored by the National Institute of Aging.

MD/PhD - Division of Biological Sciences

Students who wish to pursue an MD/PhD independent of the above programs may apply to obtain full fellowship funding through any of the eighteen PhD degree granting departments and committees in the Division of Biological Sciences.
