GDTP Application Procedure

The GDTP program is open to current Pritzker School of Medicine students who have a demonstrated interest in pursuing a PhD degree in biomedical research. Students wishing to be considered for the GDTP program should have a strong academic record and relevant laboratory experience. First year students interested in the GDTP program are strongly encouraged to participate in the Pritzker School of Medicine Summer Research Program.

Successful applicants seek out a research sponsor and graduate degree unit prior to applying to the program and generally have fulfilled at least some graduate course requirements.

Formal applications are normally due in the Winter Quarter of the second year of medical school. The GDTP application requires three letters of recommendation, your University of Chicago transcript and the completion of several essays.

Applicants then undergo two formal interviews, with decisions announced by the end of the spring quarter. Appointments typically begin July 1.

Geoffrey Wool

When I applied to medical school, I didn't realize how strong my interest in basic research was. The GDTP program at the University of Chicago gave me an outlet for my burgeoning research interests. The training is rewarding in and of itself, and I know it will open many doors in my career.- Geoffrey Wool, MD, PhD student
