Each quarter, we gather the various achievements—publications, presentations, awards, and more—of our students to showcase their accomplishments. Ahmad Allaw, MS3 gave an oral presentation on his work entitled “Guidelines Update Modified Trends in Use and Improved Outcomes for Patients Receiving Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy” at the 40th Annual Heart Rhythm Scientific Sessions in San Francisco, CA this May. This work was related to SRP and S&D research and was performed under the guidance of Gaurav Upadhyay, MD’06.

Christopher Awounou, MS3 gave a poster presentation on his work entitled “Human v. Machine: A Comparison of Satisfaction with Two Different Foreign Language Interventions at Emergence for Subjects Who Do Not Speak English” at the International Anesthesia Research Society Annual Meeting and the International Science Symposium in Montreal, Canada this May. This work was related to SRP and S&D research. This work was also co-authored by Yaman Kherallah, MS3 and was performed under the guidance of David Glick, MD, MBA.

Stephanie Bi, MS3 published her work entitled "Improving Shared Decision Making for Asian American Pacific Islander Sexual and Gender Minorities" in Medical Care.

Katherine Brito, M2 was awarded the 2019 Latino Medical Student Association National Scholarship.

David Cook, MS3 gave a poster presentation on his work entitled “Improving Hospitalized Children's Sleep by Reducing Excessive Overnight Blood Pressure Monitoring” at the Pediatric Hospital Medicine 2019 Conference in Seattle, WA this July. This work was related to SRP and S&D research. This work was also co-authored by Mike Chamberlain, MD’19 and performed under the guidance of Nicola Orlov, MD ’08, MPH. Additionally, David was the first author of a study published in Spine. “Benchmarks of duration and magnitude of opioid consumption after common spinal procedures: a database analysis of 47,823 patients" was co-authored by Sam Kaskovich, MS3 and Sean Pirkle, MS3 and was performed under the guidance of Michael Lee, MD and Lewis Shi, MD.

Sebastian Cruz, MS4 gave an oral presentation on his work entitled "The clinical presentation and comorbidities associated with granuloma annulare in the pediatric population: a retrospective study” at the 2019 Chicago Dermatological Society and Illinois Dermatological Society Presidents' Conference and Awards Luncheon this May. He was awarded the June K. Robinson Poster Award in Pediatrics. This work was performed under the guidance of Sarah Stein, MD.

Rahul Dadwani, MS3 gave a poster presentation on his entitled “Comparing the National Cost-Effectiveness of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Screening Strategies” at the Society of General Internal Medicine National Conference in Washington, D.C. this May. This work was related to SRP and S&D research and was performed under the guidance of Neda Laiteerapong, MD, MS.

Sarah Follman, MS3 published "Naloxone prescriptions among commercially insured individuals at high risk of opioid overdose" as a first author in JAMA. She then gave an oral presentation on her work entitled “Low Naloxone Prescriptions among Individuals at High Risk of Opioid-Related Overdose Despite Healthcare Interactions” at the Society of General Internal Medicine's Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. this May. She won an award for Best Oral Abstract in Quality Improvement and Patient Safety. In June, she presented an oral abstract of this work at Academy Health's Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. This work was related to SRP and S&D research and was performed under the guidance of Vineet Arora, MD, MAPP’03 and Mai Pho, MD, MPH.

Logan Galansky, MS4 gave a poster presentation on her work entitled “Predicting Upper Extremity Arterial Disease – Analysis of Patient Symptoms and Comorbidities” at the Plastic Surgery Research Council Conference in Baltimore, MD this May. This work was related to S&D research and was performed under the guidance of Patrick Reavey, MD.

Deirdre Gorman, MS4 received the Top Poster award at the 2019 University of Chicago Medicine Quality and Safety Symposium this May. This work was related to SRP and S&D research and was performed under the guidance of Neda Laiteerapong, MD, MS.

Christopher Johns, MS3 gave an oral presentation on his work entitled “Predictors of Adherence to Sepsis Treatment Guidelines in the Emergency Department” at the Society of Emergency Medicine Annual Meeting in Las Vegas, NV this May. This work was related to SRP and S&D research and was performed under the guidance of John Purakal, MD.

Samuel Kaskovich, MS3 gave a poster presentation on his work entitled “Matching Patients with COPD to Personalized Care: A Novel Machine- Learning Tool to Predict Cause of 90-Day Readmission” at the American Thoracic Society Meeting in Dallas, TX this May. This work was co-authored by Max Hemmrich, MS3. This work was also related to SRP and S&D research and was performed under the guidance of Valerie Press, MD, MPH.

Gena Lenti, MS3 gave a poster presentation on her work entitled “Generic Prescribing of Oral Contraceptives among Internal Medicine Physicians” at the AAMC Integrating Quality Conference in Minneapolis, MN this June. This work was co-authored by Hanna Wilson, MS4. This work was also related to SRP and S&D research and was performed under the guidance of Vineet Arora, MD, MAPP’03.

Henry Litt, MS3 gave a poster presentation of his work entitled “Addressing Food Insecurity: Evaluating Factors Associated with Reach of a School-based Summer Meals” at the Pediatric Academic Societies Meeting in Baltimore, MD this April. This work was related to SRP and S&D research and was performed under the guidance of Anna Volerman, MD.

Samantha Mannion, MS4 gave a poster presentation on her work entitled “Patient and Provider Perceptions of Diabetes Group Visits at Community Health Centers” at the Society of General Internal Medicine Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. this May. This work was related to S&D research and was performed under the guidance of Arshiya Baig, MD, MPH.

Noam Margalit, MS2 was accepted to the Memorial Sloan Kettering Medical Student Summer Fellowship in New York, NY.

Christianah Ogunleye, MS3 gave a poster presentation on her work entitled “Engaging Minority Urban Teens to Lead Social Media Campaigns to Promote Clinical Research Careers in their Communities” at the Society of General Internal Medicine in Washington, D.C. this May. This work was co-authored by Jhon Marte, MS3. This work was also related to SRP and S&D research and was performed under the guidance of Vineet Arora, MD, MAPP’03.

Anastasia Pozdnyakova, MS4 gave a poster presentation on her work entitled” Impact of Anesthesia Type on Patient Satisfaction with Anesthesia Care” at the International Anesthesia Research Society 2019 Annual Meeting in Montreal, Canada this May. This work was related to S&D research and was performed under the guidance of David Glick, MD, MBA.

Frank Qian, MS4 published his work entitled "Mendelian randomisation study of height and body mass index as modifiers of ovarian cancer risk in 22,588 BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers" in the British Journal of Cancer as the first author this June. This work was supported by the AOA Carolyn L. Kuckein Student Research Fellowship. Additionally, Frank gave an oral presentation on his work entitled "Mendelian randomization to assess the causal associations of height and body mass index with breast and ovarian cancer among BRCA1/2 mutation carriers" at the International Forum for Young Scholars in Health Management in Nanjing, China. This work was performed under the guidance of Dezheng Huo, MD, PhD. Lastly; Frank was awarded a Student Scholarship in Cardiovascular Disease from the American Heart Association to pursue a research project examining the relationship between changes in serial high-sensitivity cardiac troponin levels and incident cardiovascular disease events. This work will be performed under the guidance of Tamar S. Polonsky, MD, MS.

Jesse Siegel, MS3 gave an oral presentation on his work entitled “Olfactory dysfunction persists after smoking cessation and signals increased cardiovascular risk” at the Rhinoworld Conference in Chicago, IL this June. The work was related to SRP and S&D research and was performed under the guidance of Jayant Pinto, MD.

Noah Simon, MS4 gave an oral presentation on his work entitled “The Effect of Pharmacological Dilation on Calculation of Targeted and Ideal IOL Power Using Multivariable Formulas” at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery Annual Meeting in San Diego, CA this May. This work was co-authored by Michael Zhang, MS4. This work was also related to SRP and S&D research and was performed under the guidance of Kamran Riaz, MD.

Elise Timtim, MS4 received the 2019 AΩA Carolyn L. Kuckein Student Research Fellowship and the Illinois Society for the Prevention of Blindness Research Grant to support her research on the "Long-term ocular and systemic complications following treatment of retinopathy of prematurity using Medicaid claims database." This work will be performed under the guidance of Sarah Hilkert Rodriguez, MD, MPH.

Kelly Twohig, MS3 gave a poster presentation on her work entitled “Abnormal Vital Signs are Common After Laparoscopic or Open Bowel Resection and are Poor Predictors of Anastomotic Leak” at the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons Annual Scientific Meeting in Cleveland, OH this June. This work was related to S&D research and was performed under the guidance of Benjamin Shogan, MD.

Michael Zhang, MS4 published a manuscript titled "A randomized, controlled trial of video supplementationon the cataract surgery informed consent process" in Graefe's Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology this May. This work was related to SRP research and was performed under the guidance of Kamran Riaz, MD.
