George Mejicano, MD, MS Professor of Medicine, Senior Associate Dean for Education, Oregon Health and Science University
George Mejicano, MD, MS received his medical degree from the University of Illinois and completed his post-graduate training at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics. He is board certified in both internal medicine and adult infectious diseases. He is currently a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). His clinical interests include antibiotic resistance and emerging infections. Dr. Mejicano served on the Board of Scientific Counselors at the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and he was the Interim Head of the Section of Infectious Diseases at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health from 2007-08.
In addition to his clinical qualifications, Dr. Mejicano holds a master’s degree in adult education from the University of Wisconsin. His educational interests include competency-based, time-variable education and outcomes assessment. He has done research on how education can lead to improvements in medical practice and was awarded the Felch Research Award by the Alliance for Continuing Education in the Health Professions in 2002. He currently serves as the Senior Associate Dean for Education where he oversees the entire educational portfolio in the OHSU School of Medicine including the MD program, 85 accredited residency and fellowship programs, continuing professional development and multi-specialty Maintenance of Certification portfolio programs, and the school’s 32 graduate programs (including medical physics, human nutrition, clinical psychology and physician assistant studies). At OHSU, he Co-Chairs both the Academic Planning Task Force and the OHSU 2025 Education Council. In addition, he serves on the OHSU health system’s Academic Advisory Council, the university’s Academic and Student Affairs Council, the University Transition Task Force and the University Cabinet. Dr. Mejicano led OHSU’s team that worked on the Association of American Medical Colleges’ Core Entrustable Professional Activities for Entering Residency Pilot Program and was the principal investigator of OHSU’s five-year $1 million dollar grant from the Accelerating Change in Medical Education strategic initiative sponsored by the American Medical Association (AMA). These efforts were instrumental in implementing OHSU’s internationally recognized MD curriculum.
Dr. Meicano is the principal investigator of the California Oregon Medical Partnership to Address Disparities in Rural Education and Health (COMPADRE) that was awarded $1.8 million as part of the AMA’s Reimagining Residency strategic initiative. He was a team leader in the Community of Learning sponsored by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education that was part of that organization’s Pursing Excellence initiative. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education and is the recipient of the Bob Razkowski Hero Award from that organization. In addition, he worked as a consultant for the American Board of Medical Specialties regarding Maintenance of Certification and served as the President of the Alliance for Continuing Education in the Health Professions. He is a Past Chair of the AMA’s Academic Physicians Section and chaired the CPD Section of the AAMC’s Group on Educational Affairs. He is a member of the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) which accredits medical education programs in the United States and Canada, and he is the Co-Chair of the UME GME Review Committee that was recently charged by the Coalition for Physician Accountability to develop recommendations on how to optimize the transition from medical school to residency. He has received numerous teaching awards from students, residents and faculty peers, and is a sought-after speaker who has given hundreds of national and international presentations during his career, including the 2017 keynote on competency-based education to the World Medical Association’s general assembly.
