Why a Physician Scientist?
I want to be a full-time chemical biologist, who maintains long-term relationships with patients who inspire and motivate my research. This journey will be long and tough, and many unexpected things are bound to occur, but I am prepared to do what I love.
When did you become interested in research?
As a freshman at WashU, I fell in love with chemistry. Chemistry elegantly combines the mathematical rigor of physics with the beauty and practicality of biology. Simple chemical concepts, like electrostatics, orbitals, and laws of thermodynamics, explain unbelievably complex biological phenomena. My desire to know more compelled me towards chemical research.
Why is research exciting?
As my undergrad PI used to say to me, "research is a jealous mistress." Research will sap your energy, strain your patience, destroy your pride, and devour your free time. And occasionally show you something truly marvelous, miraculous even, that stirs the imagination and reminds you why you love research in the first place.
