Hasenin Al-khersan, MS3 received the Koch Kellan Scholarship. Named in honor of ophthalmologists Paul S. Koch and Robert E. Kellan, the Koch Kellan Scholarship is awarded annually by Paragon BioTeck, Inc. to one second- or third-year medical student committed to pursuing a career in ophthalmology.
Kenneth Barshop, MS4 published his research titled “New pathways, new targets: Visceral hypersensitivity pathogenesis in irritable bowel syndrome” in Clinical and Translational Gastroenterology this past February. Kenneth also published his article, titled, “Cannabis Abuse is Increasing and Associated with Increased Emergency Department Utilization in Gastroenterology Patients” in Digestive Diseases and Sciences this past March under the guidance of David Rubin, MD.
Joseph Bellairs, MS3 presented his poster on the “Cathepsin-cleavable BIM BH3 peptide amphiphiles are potent inducers of cellular apoptosis” during the American Society of Hematology Annual Meeting this past December. This research was related to S&D work performed under the guidance of James LaBelle, MD, PhD.
Rene Bermea, MS4 presented his poster on the “Anti-RBP pPositivity in corticosteroid/ immunosuppressant naïve systemic lupus erythematosus indicates worse disease activity and quality-of-life” during the 2016 American Medical Association Research Symposium this past November. This research was related to S&D work performed under the guidance of Kichul Ko, MD.
Brandon Berger, MS3 presented his poster and oral presentation titled “Cost-effectiveness of meglumine antimoniate and caretaker DOTS miltefosine treatment for cutaneous leishmaniasis for pediatric patients in Colombia” on separate days during the Infectious Diseases Week 2015 in San Diego, CA this October. This research was related to S&D work performed under the guidance of Allison Bartlett, MD, MS.
Dan Camacho, MS2 co-authored research on the “IRF4-dependent IL-33 production in lung dendritic cell populations” with Elijah Darnell, MS2 who presented it during the 2016 Autumn Immunology Conference this past November. The work was performed under the guidance of Anne Sperling, PhD.
Stuart Davidson, MS3 presented his research on the “Intraoperative variation and acquisition of complex operative techniques: Pancreaticoduodenectomy” during the 2016 Academic Surgical Congress this past February. This research was related to S&D work performed under the guidance of Alexander Langerman, MD.
Arjun Dayal, MS4 presented his poster, “A Lifetime of learning: Insights from the ACEP simulation-based immersive medical (SIM) training course” during the Second D CMSS Simulation Summit And 2015 Annual Meeting this past November. This research was related to S&D work performed under the guidance of Ernest Wang, MD. Arjun also delivered a plenary at the Society for Acad Emergency Medicine (SAEM) this past February. The plenary, titled, “The influence of gender on resident evaluation: The examination of a longitudinal, multicenter, direct observation evaluation dataset” focused on examining determinants of emergency medicine residents’ perceived performance across eight departments over the past two years.
Maggie Dennin, MS2 co-authored research on “Improving school attendance through asthma education: A systematic literature review of school-based asthma education programs” with Shilpa Vasishta, MS3, who presented the work during the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) National Conference & Exhibition 2015 this past October. Maggie also presented her research titled, “What do parents think? Parent perspectives of asthma care in schools” during The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) 2015 Meeting this past October. These projects were related to S&D work performed under the guidance of Anna Volerman, MD.
Vishan Dhamsania, MS3 presented his poster on the “Impact of an ethanol stove intervention on pulmonary function in pregnant women exposed to household air pollution” during the American College of Chest Physicians Conference (CHEST) 2015 this past October. This research was related to S&D work performed under the guidance of Christopher Sola Olopade, MD, MPH.
Elizabeth Donnelly, MS3 was awarded the 2016 SGIM’s Young Scholars in GIM Scholarship by the Society of General Internal Medicine. She received the award this past February, and will attend SGIM’s Annual Meeting in May.
Natalie Feldman, MS2 presented her poster titled, “Physicians' perceptions of psychiatric care delivered in general medical settings: A targeted needs assessment” during the 2015 Association of Medicine and Psychiatry Annual Meeting this past October, as well as at the AMA National Student Meeting Medical Student Section this past November. This research was related to S&D work performed under the guidance of Jeanne Farnan, MD’02, MHPE.
Sean Gaffney, MS3 recently published his co-authored article, “The Modified, Multi-patient Observed Simulated Handoff Experience (M-OSHE): Assessment and feedback for entering residents on handoff performance” with Vineet Arora, MD, MAPP in the Journal of General Internal Medicine.
Andrew Golden, MS4 co-authored a published article in The Western Journal of Emergency Medicine in November of 2015. The article, titled, “Teaching CONSULT: Consultation with novel methods and simulation for UME longitudinal training,” was co-authored with Keme Carter, MD.
Mila Grossman, MS2 presented her poster titled, “Awakenings? Patient and hospital staff perceptions of nighttime disruptions and their impact on patient sleep,” during the 2016 Hospital Medicine Conference this past March. This research was related to S&D and SRP work performed under the guidance of Vineet Arora, MD, MAPP.
Oliver Hulland, MS3 is the second author of three abstracts, the first being a paper titled “Patients with irritable bowel syndrome-diarrhea have lower disease-specific quality of life than irritable bowel syndrome-constipation” published in the World Journal of Gastroenterology this past June. The second publication was a paper titled “Recto-sigmoid localization of radiopaque markers does not correlate with prolonged balloon expulsion in chronic constipation: results from a multicenter cohort” published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology this past June. The final publication was a paper titled “Resting anal pressure, not outlet obstruction or transit, predicts healthcare utilization in chronic constipation: Results from a North American cohort” published in Neurogastroenterology and Motility this past July. All three projects were related to research performed under the guidance of David Rubin, MD. This past February, Oliver also presented his poster, titled “#EMConf Social Media Curriculum” during the Innovations in Medical Education Conference 2016. This research was related to S&D work performed under the guidance of Seth Trueger, MD.
Aamir Hussain, MS2 presented his poster, “An analysis of the use of CT pulmonary angiography in young women at an urban emergency department” at the Society for Critical Care Medicine Congress 2016 in February. His work was conducted under the guidance of James Walter, MD. Aamir also recently published an article titled, “Engaging religious identity in healthcare: A resource for health professionals on the intersections between medicine and religion” in the Interfaith Youth Core.
Mohammed Hussain, MS4 presented his research on the “Analyses of 22,833 orthopaedic surgeons’ scores from two major physician-rating websites” during the 2016 American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) Annual Meeting this past March. This research was related to S&D work performed under the guidance of Lewis Shi, MD.
Ethan Jaffee, MS4 presented his poster, titled, “Isolation and eyesight: Predictors of inpatient health literacy” during the 2015 Health Literacy Research Conference this past November. This research was related to S&D work performed under the guidance of Valerie Press, MD, MPH.
Chester Kao, MS2 presented his poster on “Identifying and validating a gene network responsive to imatinib treatment in a chronic myeloid leukemia cell line” during the 2015 APAMSA National Conference this past September. This research was related to S&D work performed under the guidance of Stephanie Huang, PhD.
Colleen Kelly, MS2 passed the first phase of the 2016 University of Chicago App Challenge with her app, titled “MY DECISION”. Colleen’s app formalizes the process of eliciting and incorporating patient preferences into the cancer treatment decision-making process. The app asks patients to rate how much they value four key dimensions—survivorship, side effects, physician preference, and cost—to match patients with treatments that best align with their preferences. Colleen worked closely with Jonas de Souza, MD in creating the app.
Sarah Kennedy, MS2 presented her poster on the “Academic-community collaboration to improve childhood health and wellness through school programs and policies in underserved communities” during the 2015 American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) National Conference & Exhibition this past October. This research was related to S&D work performed under the guidance of Anna Volerman-Beaser, MD.
Kate Kinasz, MS3 authored her first publication in the Journal of Adolescent Health, titled “Sex differences in the clinical presentation of eating disorders in youth” this past January. Kate’s research was related to her S&D work under the guidance of Daniel LeGrange, PhD. In addition, Kate co-authored a publication in the International Journal of Eating Disorders, titled “Picking and nibbling in children and adolescents with eating disorders” this past December.
Sunny Kung, MS2 presented her research on the “Cost-coping strategies and perceived social isolation in locally advanced head and neck cancer” during the 2016 Multidisciplinary Head and Neck Cancer Symposium this past February. This research was related to SRP work performed under the guidance of Jonas de Souza, MD. Afterwards, Sunny’s research was featured in a press release by Yahoo! Finance article, titled, “Majority of patients with locally advanced head and neck cancers use life-altering strategies to cope with cost of treatment.”
Peter Ladner, MS2 presented his poster, titled, “Function 6 months and 3 years after pediatric critical illness: Results from the Survivor Outcomes Study (SOS)” as a “Research Snapshot” during the 2016 Society of Critical Care Medicine Annual Congress this past February. This research was related to S&D work performed under the guidance of Neethi Pinto, MD, MS.
Cody Lee, MS1 presented two pieces of research titled, “All-epiphyseal physeal-sparing anterior cruciate ligament reconstructive surgery” and “Extra-articular drilling of OCD lesions of the medial femoral condyle” during the 2016 American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Meeting this past March. Cody’s research was performed under the guidance of Steven Chudik, MD.
Sooyoung Lim, MS2 presented her research on “3D quantitation of sinonasal inflammation correlates with symptoms and disease-specific quality of life in patients with rhinosinusitis” during the 2016 American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology this past March. This research was related to S&D work performed under the guidance of Jayant Pinto, MD.
Allison Louis, MS4 co-authored research on the “Reading between the lines: Evaluating poor health literacy among hospitalized patients with diabetes” with Janaki Patel, MS3, who presented the work during the 2015 Health Literacy Research Conference this past November. The work was performed under the guidance of Valerie Press, MD, MPH. Allison co-authored an additional publication with Janaki, titled, “Blind sided: Missing poor visual acuity and decreased self-efficacy in hospitalized patients with diabetes” that was presented at the 2016 Society of Hospital Medicine conference this past March.
Lukas Matern, MS2 presented his poster, “Handoff interrupted: Auditory distractions in a standardized handoff simulation for incoming residents” during the 2015 American Medical Association (AMA) National Medical Student Meeting this past November. This research was related to S&D work performed under the guidance of Jeanne Farnan, MD, MHPE. Lukas also co-authored research on the poster titled, “Hospital horror story: Situational awareness to assess interns' recognition of safety and low-value hospital hazards” with Kathleen Wiest, MS2, who presented it at the Society of Hospital Medicine Annual Conference 2016 (HM16) this past March. This research was related to S&D work performed under the guidance of Vineet Arora, MD, MAPP. In March, Lukas presented his poster titled, “Handoff interrupted: Testing auditory distractions in a standardized handoff simulation exercise for incoming resident physicians” at the Society of Hospital Medicine Annual Meeting (HM16). This research was a part of Lukas’ work in SRP and S&D under the guidance of Dr. Farnan.
Ryan McKillip, MS2 was awarded the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics (ASCPT) 2016 Presidential Trainee Award in recognition of his abstract titled, “Patient (PT) perceptions of care as influenced by the implementation of a large institutional pharmacogenomic testing program.” Ryan’s research involved analyzing how pharmacogenomic information can impact the doctor-patient relationship and was completed as part of the 1200 Patients Project. Ryan also presented his poster on “Introducing medical students to survivorship care through an elective oncology summer program” during the 2016 American Society of Clinical Oncology Survivorship Symposium this past January. This research was related to S&D work performed under the guidance of Dan Golden, MD.
Julie Mhlaba, MS4 was recently awarded the AMA Physicians of Tomorrow Scholarship, which acknowledges students who have displayed academic excellence. Julie also published her research titled “Predictive soft tissue airway volume analysis in mandibular distraction: Pushing the envelope in surgical planning for obstructive sleep apnea” in the Journal of Cranial Facial Surgery this past January. She published her article, titled, “Surgical instrumentation: The true cost of instrument trays and a potential strategy for optimization” in the Journal of Hospital Administration with co-author Emily Stockert, MD’15, MBA’10 in September 2015.
William Moser, MS2 co-authored a poster with Hunter Eason, MS2 titled, “Medical imaging use by pediatricians: Identifying core imaging concepts and their optimal point of introduction.” He then presented it during the 2016 AUR Annual Meeting this past March. This research was related to SRP work performed under the guidance of Christopher Straus, MD’92.
Akash Parekh, MS4 presented his poster on “Late toxicity after post prostatectomy radiation therapy: Evaluating RTOG 0534 tissue sparing guidelines” during the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) this past October. This research was performed under the guidance of Stanley Liauw, MD.
Janaki Patel, MS3 presented her research on the “Reading between the lines: Evaluating poor health literacy among hospitalized patients with diabetes” during the 2015 Health Literacy Research Conference this past November. Pamela Peters, MS3 recently published her research on “Modeling the early steps of ovarian cancer metastasis in an organotypic culture of the human peritoneal cavity” with the Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE) this past December. This research was related to S&D work performed under the guidance of Ernst Lengyel, MD, PhD and Hilary Kenny, PhD.
Brooke Peterson, MS2 presented her poster “Is an improved doctor-patient relationship associated with greater rates of Advance Care Planning (ACP)?” during the 2015 AMA Research Symposium this past November. This research was related to S&D work performed under the guidance of David Meltzer, MD’92, PhD’93.
Ellie Proussaloglou, MS2 was awarded the 2016 Conquer Cancer Foundation of ASCO Merit Award by the Conquer Cancer Foundation of ASCO and the 2016 ASCO Quality Care Symposium Committee. She received the award this past February for her abstract, titled, “Preferred cost communicator and Financial Distress (FD) in patients with cancer.”
Abhinav Reddy, MS2 presented his poster on the “Patterns of failure after radical cystectomy for pT3-4 bladder cancer: Implications for adjuvant radiation therapy” during the 2016 Genitourinary Cancers Symposium Meeting this past January. This research was related to S&D work performed under the guidance of Stanley Liauw, MD.
Darin Rosen, MS2 co-authored research on the “SimField: A portable low-cost visual field test” with Jared Sokol, MS2, who presented the work during the Creating Value Challenge 2015 this past October. Darin’s work was performed under the guidance of Susan Ksiazek.

Adam Vohra, MS4 published his co-authored article, titled “Intensive care unit admission with community-acquired pneumonia” in the American Journal of Medical Sciences this past November, under the mentorship of Gregory Ruhnke, MD. The nature of the project looks at predictors of ICU admission and costs of care for patients hospitalized with community-acquired pneumonia. Adam also co-authored the text, “First Aid for the USMLE Step 2 Clinical Knowledge, 9 Edition,” writing and editing chapters on Cardiology and Epidemiology.
Jack Weick, MS3 presented his poster on the “Utilization and cost of hyaluronic acid injections in advanced osteoarthritis of the knee” during the 2016 American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) this past March. This research was related to S&D work performed under the guidance of Douglas Dirschl, MD.
Adam Weiner, MS4 presented his poster on the “National economic conditions and patient insurance status predict prostate cancer diagnosis rates and management decisions” during the Society of Urologic Oncology 16th Annual Meeting this past December. Adam was also first-author on the publication of this research. This research was related to S&D work performed under the guidance of Scott Eggener, MD.
Kathleen Wiest, MS2 presented her poster titled, “Hospital horror story: Situational awareness to assess interns' recognition of safety and low-value hospital hazards” during the Society of Hospital Medicine Annual Conference 2016 (HM16) this past March. This research was co-authored with Lukas Matern, MS2 and was related to S&D work performed under the guidance of Vineet Arora, MD, MAPP. Kathleen’s same research was also awarded the 2015 AMA Research Symposium best in category of Clinical Outcome and Health Care Improvement.
Jacob Young, MS3 published his research as a second author, titled “A novel single-chain antibody redirects adenovirus to IL13Rα2- expressing brain tumors” in the Journal of Scientific Reports this past December. This research was related to SRP and S&D work performed under the guidance of Maciej Lesniak, MD.
Rebecca Zuckerman, MS2 presented her research on the “The distinct roles of somatization on menstrual and non-menstrual pelvic pain” during Neuroscience 2015 this past October. This research was related to SRP work performed under the guidance of Kevin Hellman, PhD.
