Winter 2018 Student Achievements

Each quarter, we gather the various achievements—publications, presentations, awards, and more—of our students to showcase their accomplishments. This article encompasses honors from the Winter quarter of 2017-18 through February 9, 2018. Achievements from February 10 onwards will be included in the Spring Student Achievements article.

Michael Andersen, MS2 gave a poster presentation titled, “Simplified Daily Assessments of Sleep Quality, Pain and Quality of Life in IBD Patients Correlate with Validated Measures” at the Advances in Inflammatory Bowel Disease Conference in Orlando, Florida last November. This work was related to SRP and S&D research performed under the guidance of David Rubin, MD.

Tiffany Bell, MS3  gave an oral presentation on her work entitled “Partnering at the intersections: Incorporate Reproductive Justice into your Curriculum” at the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Martin L. Stone, MD Faculty Development Seminar in Manalapan, FL this January. This research was done under the guidance of Sabrina Holmquist, MD.

Catherine Castro, MS2 had her article titled “Tracking Mayaro Virus in the Amazon Basin for Risk of Wider Spread” published on the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene annual meeting blog in November. Catherine’s blog focused on the work of Carla Mavian’s findings on the migration of the Mayaro virus. Additionally, Catherine was awarded the prestigious Hispanocare scholarship on behalf of the Michael Reese Research and Education Foundation.

Rahul Dadwani, MS1 and Sarah Follman, MS1 were chosen to be a part of the Choosing Wisely Students and Trainees Advocating for Resource Stewardship (STARS) program under the mentorship of Vineet Arora, MD, AM’03. The STARS program is a student-led campaign that seeks to alter the current culture of medical education by addressing adverse behaviors that may lead to unneeded care.

John Hawkins, MS2 gave a poster presentation on his research entitled, “Identifying Protective Factors for Poor Maternal Outcomes” at the North American Primary Care Research Group Conference in Montreal, Canada last November. This research was related to SRP and S&D research performed under the guidance of Debra Stulberg, MD.

Tyrone Johnson, MS2 and Vince Morgan, MS2 were a part of a panel presentation where they discussed their research entitled, “Paving the Advancement of Black Males in Academic Medicine” in February at the BNGAP National Pre-Faculty Career Development Conference in Miami, Florida. This research was related to Tyrone’s S&D work and was performed under the guidance of Monica Vela, MD.

Olumuyiwa Idowu, MS4 and Michael Petravick, MS4 published a paper titled, “Preferably Not My Surgery: A Survey of Patient and Family Member Comfort with Concurrent and Overlapping Surgeries” in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. This paper was co-authored by Jonathan P. Edgington, MD, Michael J. Lee, MD, and Lewis L. Shi, MD.

Donald Lei, MS2 will give a poster presentation on his work co-authored by Michael Andersen, MS2 entitled “Simplified Daily Assessments of Sleep Quality, Pain and Quality of Life in IBD Patients Correlate with Validated Measures” at the European Crohn's and Colitis Organization Conference in Vienna this February. This research was related to SRP and S&D research performed under the guidance of David Rubin, MD.

Frank Qian, MS3 published a paper entitled "Genetic variants demonstrating flip-flop phenomenon and breast cancer risk prediction among women of African ancestry" as the first co-author in the Breast Cancer Research and Treatment Journal in December. This work is related to S&D research performed under the guidance of Dezheng Huo, MD, Ph.D.

Sylvia Ranjeva, MSTP had her work on HPV featured in an article entitled, “Repeat Infection Likely for Men with HPV” in US News & World Report. Sylvia’s work looked at the importance of early HPV vaccination in young men to reduce the prevalence of HPV.

Margaret Wang, MS4 published a paper on her research titled, “Human Papillomavirus Viral Load as a Useful Triage Tool for Non-16/18 High-Risk Human Papillomavirus Positive Women: A Prospective Screening Cohort Study" as a first author in Gynecology Oncology last November. This work was conducted under the guidance of Youlin Qiao MD, Ph.D, and Fanghui Zhao M.D., Ph.D.

Aaron Wallace, MS2 was awarded funding from the BSD Diversity and Inclusion Small Grants Program to present his research entitled, “Is there a disparity for minimally-invasive surgery in Pediatric Urology? A Single Institution Experience” at the 2018 American Urological Association.

Meng Wu, MS3 published a paper entitled “Developing a Virtual Teach-To-Goal Inhaler Technique Learning Module: A Mixed Methods Approach” in The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice. This paper was related to SRP research and co-authored by Nicole Woodrick, MA, Vineet Arora, MD, AM’03, Jeanne Farnan, MD’02, MPHE, and Valerie Press, MD, MPH.

Rebecca Zuckerman, MS4 was awarded funding for her proposal titled, “Assessment of OBGYN resident attitudes and preparedness in addressing the health needs and concerns of LGBTQ patients” by the BSD Diversity and Inclusion Small Grants Program.
