Lucy Godley, MD, PhD

Dr. Lucy Godley joined the University of Chicago faculty in 2003, having completed her undergraduate degree at Harvard University and Medical Scientist Training Program at the University of California, San Francisco (PhD) and Northwestern University (MD). Dr. Godley completed her Internal Medicine and Hematology/Oncology fellowships at the University of Chicago and then joined the faculty. Her laboratory studies the molecular mechanisms of tumorigenesis, with particular interest in epigenetic modifications in cancer as well as inherited forms of leukemia. Dr. Godley’s laboratory discovered widespread aberrant splicing of the DNMT3B gene, producing truncated proteins in virtually all human tumors. More recently, her laboratory has also been studying the role of 5-hydroxymethylcytosine, the newly discovered “six DNA base” in leukemia and hematopoietic cell differentiation. Clinically, Dr. Godley is active in the Leukemia and Stem Cell Transplant Programs.
