Each quarter, we gather the various achievements—publications, presentations, awards, and more—of our students to showcase their accomplishments. Stephanie Bi, MS2 was granted the Graduate Student Leadership Recognition Award for her dedication and commitment to bettering graduate student life at UChicago.

Jason Castaneda, MS2 gave a poster presentation on his work entitled “Improving Pediatrician Knowledge of Early Language and Cognitive Development” at the AMA Research Symposium in National Harbor, MD this November. This work was related to SRP and S&D research performed under the guidance of Dana Suskind, MD.

Jessica Chen, MS3 gave a poster presentation on her work entitled “One Key Question (OKQ) and Contraceptive Counseling: Baseline Needs Assessment” at the North American Primary Care Research Group Annual Meeting in Chicago, IL this November. This work was related to S&D research performed under the guidance of Debra Stulberg, MD.

David Cook, MS2  published a paper, in August, as first author in ASME Journal of Engineering Materials and Technology entitled "Mechanical and electrical characterization of two carbon/ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene composites created via equal channel angular processing." This work is a continuation of his honors thesis performed as an undergraduate at Dartmouth College, which details the invention of a novel method of producing conductive polymer composites that could have wide-ranging industrial and biomaterial applications. David is also an owner of the intellectual property underlying this technology.

Charles Du, MS4  gave an oral presentation on his work entitles “ Error-Checking Intraoperative Arterial Line Blood Pressures” at the Anesthesiology 2018 Annual Meeting in San Francisco, CA this October. This work was related to S&D research performed under the guidance of David Glick, MD.

Matthew Goodsmith, MS2 gave a poster presentation on his world entitled “The Impact of Biomarker Screening and Cascade Genetic Testing on the Cost-Effectiveness of MODY Genetic Testing” at the Center for Chronic Disease Research and Policy Sixth Annual Research Symposium in Chicago, IL this October. This work was related to SRP research performed under the guidance of Elbert Huang, MD.

Jia Guo, MS4 gave a moderated oral poster presentation on her work at the American Heart Association Scientific Session 2018. Her manuscript was accepted to the Journal of American College of Cardiology: Electrophysiology (JACC EP).

Aamir Hussain, MS4 gave an oral presentation on his work entitled “The Impact of Drug-Compounding Regulation on Dermatologic Practice” at the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery in Phoenix, AZ this October. This work was relation to S&D research performed under the guidance of Diana Bolotin, MD, PhD.

Tyrone Johnson, MS3 gave an oral presentation on his work entitled “Connecting the Dots: Evaluating the Use of Graphic Medicine to Empower Patient-Centered Technology Use” at Pediatric Medical Student Research Forum in Orlando, FL this September. This work was related to SRP and S&D research, and was co-authored by Jackie Nichols, MS4, under the guidance of Lolita Maria Alkureishi, MD. Tyrone also received the 15th annual Oliver Goldsmith, MD Scholarship for the Promotion and Advancement of Culturally Responsive Care. The award celebrates his efforts to improve the health care of underserved communities.

Tristian Jones, MS4 gave a poster presentation on his work entitled “State Variation in Mortality Reporting Hepatitis C and Related End Stage Liver Disease” at the American Association for the Study of Liver Disease in San Francisco, CA this November. This work was related to SRP and S&D research performed under the guidance of Mai Pho, MD.

Olivia Jordan, MS3 gave an oral presentation on her work entitled “The Role of Family on Diabetes Management for Latino Adults” at the Midwest Section of General Internal Medicine Annual Conference in Chicago, IL this September. This work was related to SRP and S&D research performed under the guidance of Arshiya Baig, MD, MPH.

Tatiana Josephy, MS2 published a paper entitled “Use of Levonorgestrel Intrauterine Device in Women with Type II Diabetes Mellitus” in the Journal of Clinical Diabetes this July.

Ryan Judd, MS2 gave an oral presentation on his work entitled “Chicago Data to Care Pilot: Improved Reengagement Efforts with Public Health Data Sharing” at the AMA Research Symposium in National Harbor, MD this November. This work was related to SRP and S&D research performed under the guidance of Jessica Ridgeway, MD.

Peter Ladner, MS4 gave a poster presentation on his work entitled “Evaluating Knowledge: Comparisons between Professionals in Pediatrics and Early Childhood Education” at the American Academy of Pediatrics National Conference in Orlando, FL this November. This work was performed under the guidance of Dana Suskind, MD.

Jim Leng, MS2 gave an oral presentation on his work entitled “Infrastructural Challenges to Radiation Therapy in a Nigerian Teaching Hospital” at American Society for Radiation Oncology Annual Meeting in San Antonio, TX this October. This work was related to SRP and &D research performed under the guidance of Olufunmilayo Olopade, MD. Jim also published a paper entitled, “Safety and Efficacy of Hypofractionated Radiation Therapy with Capecitabine in Elderly Patients with Urothelial Carcinoma” in Clinical Genitourinary Cancer.

Herman Luther, MS4 gave a poster presentation on his work entitled “Malignant Hyperthermia-like Syndrome In Obese Adolescent Male with New-Onset Diabetes Mellitus” at Anesthesiology 2018 – American Society of Anesthesiologists in San Francisco, CA this October. This work was related to S&D research performed under the guidance of Alina Lazar, MD.

Seán Lyne, MS2 gave an oral presentation on his work entitled “Plasma Biomakers of Cavernous Angioma with Symptomatic Hemorrhage (CASH)” at the 14th Annual Angioma Alliance CCM Scientific Meeting in Washington, D.C. this November. This work was related to SRP and S&D research, and was co-authored by Kenneth Avner, MS3 performed under the guidance of Issam Awad, MD.

Claudia Ma, MS4 gave a poster presentation on her work entitled “Do Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease Have Increased Cardiovascular Risk?” at the Family Medicine Midwest conference in Madison, WI this November. This work was related to SRP and S&D research performed under the guidance of Francis Alenghat, MD.

Samantha Mannion, MS3 gave an oral presentation on her work entitled “Patient and Provider Perceptions of Diabetes Group Visits in Community Health Centers” at the Society of General Internal Medicine Midwest Regional Meeting in Chicago, IL this September. This work was related to S&D research performed under the guidance of Arshiya Baig, MD, MPH.

Glenn McFadden, MS4 gave a poster presentation on his work entitled “Cost Per Redislocation Prevented: An Economic Analysis of Shoulder Dislocation in a Large, Diverse Cohort” at the American Medical Association Research Symposium and Interim Meeting in Washington, DC this November. This work was related to SRP and S&D research performed under the guidance of Douglas Dirschl, MD.

Lisa Ni, MS4 gave a poster presentation on her work entitled “National Radiation Oncology Medical Student Clerkship Trends from 2013-2017” at the American Society of Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) in San Antonio, TX this October. This work was performed under the guidance of Daniel Golden, MD.

Leonie Oostrom, MS3 gave a poster presentation on her work entitled “Disparities in PrEP Indication and Self-perceived HIV Risk Among College-Aged Gay and Bisexual Men” at Midwest LGBTQ Health Symposium in Chicago, IL this September. This work is related to S&D research performed under the guidance of Brandon Hill, PhD.

Joshua Prenner, MS3  gave an oral presentation on his work entitled “ Social Determinants of Health are Associated with Lower Rates of Genetic Testing in Individuals at Risk for Lynch Syndrome” at 2018 Collaborative Group of the Americas on Inherited Colorectal Cancer Annual Meeting in San Diego, CA this October. This work was related to S&D research, and was co-authored by Nolan Faust, MD’18 performed under the guidance of Sonia Kupfer, MD.

Frank Qian, MS3 gave a poster presentation on his work entitled “ Height and Body Mass Index as Modiferies of Ovarian Cancer Risk in 22,588 Carriers of BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations: a Mendelian Randomization study” at the American Society of Human Genetcs 2018 Annual Meeting in San Diego, CA this October. This work was related to S&D research performed under the guidance of Dezheng Huo, MD, PhD and supported by the AOA Carolyn L. Kuckein Student Research Fellowship.

Jesse Siegel, MS2 gave a poster presentation and received the Poster Award on his work entitled “Olfactory Dysfunction in Smokers Persists for 15 Years After Cessation and is an Early Biomarker for Cardiovascular Disease” at the Annual Research Symposium of the Center for Chronic Disease Research and Policy: Advancing Population Health Management Through Medical Education, Health Policy, and System Change in Chicago, IL this October. This work was related to SRP research performed under the guidance of Jayant Pinto, MD.

Eric Sullivan, MS4 published an op-ed entitled, “Air Pollution Is Killing Kids, But Trump’s EPA Doesn’t Seem To Care” in HuffPost this November.

Xanthia Tucker, MS3 gave a poster presentation on her work entitled “Differences and Influences of Parenting Factors on Body Mass Index in Sexual Minority Adolescent Females” at Midwest LGBTQ Health Symposium in Chicago, IL this September. This work was related to SRP and S&D research under the guidance of Kathryn Keenan, PhD.

Jasmine Tzeggai, MS2 gave a presentation on her work entitled “Enhancing Communication and CKD Knowledge” at the NFK-I Citywide Grand Rounds. She also received the NKF-I medical student research grant. This work was related to SRP research performed under the guidance of Milda Saunders, MD.

Hanna Vollbrecht, MS3 was awarded the Midwest Young Scholars in GIM Scholarship this August.

Jocelyn Wascher, MS4 gave a poster presentation on her work entitled “Do Women Know Whether the Hospital is Catholic?: Qualitative Follow-Up to a National Survey” at the North American Primary  Care Research Group (NAPCRG) in Chicago, IL this November. This work was related to SRP and S&D research performed under the guidance of Debra Stulberg, MD.

Yangtian Yi, MS1 published a paper on his work entitled “Mettl14 is essential for epitranscriptomic regulation of striatal function and learning” in Neuron this July. This work was performed under the guidance of Xiaoxi Zhuang, PhD.

Cindy Zhang, MS4 gave a poster presentation on her work entitled “Refining Milestones for The Fellowship in Family Planning Using a Delphi Approach” at the North American Forum on Family Planning in New Orleans, LA this October. This work was related to SRP and S&D research under the guidance of Sabrina Holmquist, MD.

Michael Zhang, MS3 published a paper entitled "Human AML activates the AHR pathway to impair NK cell development and function" this August. This work was performed under the guidance of Michael Caligiui, MD.
