The first UCEM Community Day
The University of Chicago Emergency Medicine (UCEM) residency program partnered with local families via the Turning the Page organization and other local public schools (Crane, Whitney Young, Butler, and Englewood Community) for their first inaugural UCEM Community Day on June 4, 2018.
The mission was to deliver high impact interventions, engage families that have learners interested in medicine, and field questions on how to best foster that pursuit. Throughout the two-hour session, residents and medical students were able to deliver high impact training sessions on CPR, hemorrhage control (Stop The Bleed), and ultrasound education to family units.
The day ended with a panel session. There was representation from UCEM residents and attendings, medical students, and the Director of Multicultural Affairs at the Pritzker School of Medicine. Participants received useful tips and resources that will aid the young learners in their pursuit of futures in medicine. The families were extremely receptive and truly appreciative. This program will hopefully set the stage for future outreach programs that can help spread knowledge to greater communities on violence, and saving lives while at the same time inspiring more underrepresented minorities to become future physicians.
