White Coat Ceremony

Now a nationwide tradition, the White Coat Ceremony has a particular resonance here at the University of Chicago. In 1989, the Pritzker School of Medicine held the first White Coat Ceremony to honor the beginning of our matriculating students’ paths to becoming doctors: decades later, it has become an annual tradition across the country. It is the first time medical students wear their white coats and recite the Hippocratic Oath, marking their transition to clinical care. More than just a formality, the White Coat Ceremony commemorates as the beginning of a student’s forthcoming career and serves as an official and public commitment to a lifelong practice in medicine.

This year's White Coat Ceremony will take place on Sunday, August 6, 2023 at 3:00pm.
