Description
As part of the Surgery Clerkship, each student participates in a one-day surgical simulation experience at NorthShore Hospital in Evanston. The curriculum is based on the recommendations of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the Association for Surgical Education (ASE) and focuses on a number of skills, outlined in the modules below. These skills benefit students during the Surgery Clerkship, as well as in non-surgical rotations, sub-internships, and—ultimately--residency. The experience includes didactic lectures, hands-on simulation, and pre/post-tests.
Module 1: Foley Catheter Placement
Module 2: Nasogastric Tube Placement
Module 3: Basic Knot Tying
Module 4: Basic Suturing
Module 5: Basic Laparoscopic Skills
Goal
Upon successful completion of this simulation experience, the MS3 student will have mastery of a variety surgical skills relevant to all physicians as demonstrated by an improvement in confidence performing the selected skills and an improvement in post-test scores.
